The reason is almost always the same: the math behind the claim was never actually shown.

What EcoSwitch actually does
An EcoSwitch is a wall-mounted insert at the room entrance with a slot for the guest card. When the card is inserted, the room is powered. When it's removed, a configurable timer (usually 15–30 seconds) cuts mains power to everything except a small bypass circuit — typically the fridge and one always-on socket for charging.
So when the guest leaves the room with the card, the AC compressor stops. The TV stops drawing standby power. The lights, the geyser, the bathroom heater — all off. The fridge keeps running. When the guest returns and reinserts the card, everything comes back. From the guest's perspective: nothing changed.
This is materially different from "smart thermostats" that just adjust setpoints. EcoSwitch eliminates the consumption entirely while the room is unoccupied — which, for the average leisure hotel, is 6–9 hours of every day a room is sold.

The savings calculation, step by step
Step 1: kWh wasted per occupied night
Without EcoSwitch, when a guest leaves the room with the AC on and the lights still running:
- AC: 1.5 kW × 7 hours = 10.5 kWh
- Other loads: 0.4 kW × 7 hours = 2.8 kWh
- Total wasted: 13.3 kWh per occupied night
In practice, guests don't always leave the AC running — but they also don't always remember to switch off the geyser, TV, or bathroom heater. We use 13.3 kWh as a conservative blended figure. Some properties measure higher.
Step 2: Capture rate
EcoSwitch doesn't capture 100% of this waste. Some guests stay in the room. Some take the card with them and bypass the system (briefly). Realistic capture in well-managed properties is around 70% of the theoretical maximum.
So per occupied night: 13.3 kWh × 0.70 = 9.31 kWh saved.

The honest answer: the upper number is what marketers quote. The lower number is what shows up on your bill. We always quote the lower number.
The real-world gap comes from three things: guests who stay longer in-room than the average, properties where the AC was already correctly switched off (yes, some staff do this manually), and tariff structures with off-peak slabs that reduce the effective per-unit savings. If your number comes out wildly higher than ours, you're probably overstating capture rate. If it comes out lower, you're probably understating hours-unoccupied — talk to your housekeeping team about how often they find ACs running in checked-out rooms. What EcoSwitch isn't
To be fair to your due diligence, here's what this product doesn't do:
- It doesn't reduce consumption while the guest is in the room — that's a comfort issue, not an automation one.
- It doesn't save on continuous loads like the fridge (intentionally — those are bypassed).
- It doesn't fix problems with poorly-sized ACs, leaking refrigerant, or thin glass. Those need separate attention.
- It doesn't replace good housekeeping training. The biggest single energy saving in any hotel is still "close the curtains in summer."

Frequently asked questions
Does it work with all AC types?
Yes — split AC, window AC, central VRF zones (with a relay), and PTAC units. The EcoSwitch acts as a mains-side cut, so it's agnostic to the load type. We do recommend a soft-restart timer for inverter ACs to avoid compressor stress on rapid cycling.
What about guests who want the room cool when they return?
This is the most common objection and the easiest to address. A 1.5-ton AC takes 8–12 minutes to bring a 28°C room down to 24°C. Most guests notice no difference because they're at the elevator or in the corridor for that long anyway.
